That Stubborn Kinda' Fellow - Marvin Gaye | Songs, Reviews, Credits | AllMusic
Hope you rang in the the New Year in a much better and fun way than I did I burnt If you find it hard to understand the hype surrounding Santorini, we'll set things straight here. For starters, here's a quick little checklist. And while Motown's first signing act, Marv Johnson , was one of the label's earliest hitmakers, most of his music was released to United Artists , while Motown Recordings and its imprints Tamla, Motown and Gordy, had still not produced much success.
Early releases by The Temptations and The Supremes also failed to gain national attention. Finally, however, after the release of The Marvelettes ' " Please Mr. Though Marvin Gaye initially didn't want to go along with it, after seeing the success the Marvelettes had had with a song he co-wrote for them, " Beechwood " and the emerging pop success of Mary Wells, Gaye changed his mind and began composing songs with collaborator Mickey Stevenson , determined to get footing in the still-fledgling label.
Like most Motown albums of the sixties, this album was produced quickly. Gaye wrote or co-wrote the majority of the songs on the album, often with Stevenson but also including other songwriters such as George Gordy, Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield , who had spent the early years of his career in Motown as a member of the label's Quality Control Department team. For the majority of the songs, Gaye enlisted the background vocal helping of a young group named The Del-Phis. Gordy later changed their name to The Vandellas after the group had been told to change their name before he signed them.
Reeves later recalled that upon first meeting Gaye of how shy he was, wearing a hat, glasses and a cigar but had a crush on him as he took the hat and glasses off and began singing.
Stubborn Son, ‘Birthright’ (self-released)
All in all, it's not a great album, but interesting to hear a very young Gaye as a fledgling ballad singer. This is an amazingly bad sounding CD. I don't care if it's a budget CD or not, but all of the tracks are not mono; they horribly electronically rechanneled to simulate stereo, and it sounds like I can hear turntable rumble at the start of each song, making it dubbed from a disc.
This is an early Motown album, and of course, it was probably recorded in mono, but there's no excuse for such a lousy sounding CD, regardless of its pricepoint. Musically, of course, this is well before Marvin Gaye got his 'groove on', so it's mostly turgid ballads.

That impressed Gordy enough to purchase half his contract from Fuqua and assign him to his Tamla subsidiary. But the legendary friction between Marvin and Gordy began almost at once as plans for this album were being laid, as Marvin wanted to follow in the footsteps of Cole and Charles whereas Gordy wished to target the teen audience. With the opening 8 tracks featuring Marvin emulating his idol Cole with his Jazz-oriented tenor, he then gives a hint of what was to come on the final 3 cuts, including Never Let You Go, written for him by his girlfriend Anna Berry, another of Berry's sisters who he would later marry.
The A-side did well on a regional basis but couldn't crack any national charts, nor did his next 2 single releases: And the rest, as they say, was history. See all 8 reviews.
